Tony's first bet was on a certain horse called Red Rum in the 1974 Grand National. Tony remembers, ''I was at a cousin's wedding and there was a buzz about it being Grand National day. I remember my Dad mentioning to my uncle that Red Rum had pipped his horse (Crisp) a year earlier. I thought, if the horse had won the Grand National once he must be able to do it again. I had 10p each way on Rummy at 11/1. He duly obliged and I was hooked on this wonderful sport.'' Tony has been the owner of Irish Big Race Trends for six years and has just sponsored the fifth running of the irishbigracetrends.com Handicap at Tony's local track, Beverley. He is a regular panelist on 'The Pre-race Punters Panel' before racing during the Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer and Winter Festivals around the tracks of the county. In 2014 Tony was asked if he would be interested in writing his own weekly racing column for his local paper, Bridlington Free Press. The column is now taken by various local papers around the area, including publications in Driffield, Scarborough, Malton, Whitby and Beverley - locations with strong racing links. Tony and Before The Off have recently come to an agreement for him to write a regular 'Diary Notes' column on the website Beforetheoff.com, highlighting horses that should improve from their recent runs, having found trouble in running, racing above their class or over a inadequate distance or running over an unfavourable distance. He has just celebrated his first year as a guest pundit on racing radio station Racing FM. On betting, Tony says, ''I'm lucky to have various winner finding tools in my armoury to take on the bookies at local tracks or on the big Group race stage. There are losers, of course there are losers, but the next winning race is never too far away.''
